Wood

Wood has been used as a construction material for thousands of years. It is very durable and as a natural material it is very pleasing to the eye.

Wood flooring gained popularity in the 18th and 9th centuries and was often painted, oil stained or finished with bees wax and polished by hand. Today's hard wood floors are factory finished and come from all over the world, making daily maintenance fairly simple.

Applying a floor finish to a wood floor is essential to protect it from wear and tear. Once the floor is protected sufficiently, periodic sand and re-sealing will repair the surface where scratches and light damage inevitably occur, with the actual time between sand and re-seal depending on the cleaning regime and the type of traffic the floor is exposed to.

When the protection has worn off or is very thin in certain areas, a full sand and seal is needed to restore the floor to its original state. During this process we will carry out minor works such as filling gaps on any damaged blocks or fitting cork strips to re-laying loose parquets floor blocks.

The sanding stages follow, with the appropriate grit levels to level and smoothen the floor, finishing off with 120 to 220 grit papers for an ultra-smooth finish. Unique Floorcare’s dust-free sanding system extracts 99.9% of the dust in the sanding process with no need to worry about covering up furniture.

Up to five coats of protection are used to seal the floor. This is more than some of our competitors, but it represents a more cost-effective solution for our customers, because it gives you the chance to implement an effective floor maintenance programme to protect your floor and avoid the expense of a full sand and seal again.

Our customers have different options when it comes to their desired floor finish and how they want to maintain them. We will provide guidance to all our customers on how to carry out wood floor cleaning.

We carry out wood floor restorations in domestic and commercial environments with schools, leisure facilities and sports halls our speciality. Line marking is also on offer.

Wood floors can only be fully sanded a set number of times so to keep your floor looking good and well protected, we always provide individual floor cleaning guides along with general advice on how to keep your floors in good condition for years to come.

Case Study

Wood Floor, Campion School, Royal Leamington Spa

The wood floor in the gym at Campion School in Leamington had become slippery and difficult to clean. After inspecting the floor we found that the floor seal was damaged and worn off in places and it needed a full Sand and Seal bring it back to life. Sanding and Sealing the floor also meant the court markings had to be re-painted. The school opted to have the basketball court re-installed with the new FIBA markings. Because the space available for the court itself was smaller than a full size court, we altered the measurements to the space available and it worked out quite well.

Testimonials

‘A fantastic service, from initial advice through to completion of works. Company employees had a sound understanding of the best route to achieve the most effective solution and delivered such to a very high standard.’

Finham Primary School Parquet Floor

Finham Primary School in Coventry chose to have their beautiful parquet floor completely restored after years of oil treatments. We sanded down the floor and used our preferred waterbased sealer & top finish which makes the floor very durable and also enhances the natural look of the wood. By using our waterbased system periodic maintenance becomes easier. Instead of having to belt sand to remove pre-existing treatments every time you want to repair scratches etc, simply screen sand the top finish and re-apply 2 coats of finish. It is less time consuming, you avoid unneccessary down time and overall this solution gives you better value for money. You also avoid using products that contain hazardous fumes, bad smells and other ingredients that are harmful for the environment.

Entrance matting act as the first line of defence when it comes to preventing outside dirt and grit from being walked into a building, and, even more importantly, they reduce the risk of slips and falls - a key consideration for all publicly accessible buildings. Research shows that up to 90% of all dirt and debris present within a building is tracked in from the outside on the bottom of shoes.
